Robert Ivy Predicts The Collaboration Of Health Care And Architecture

According to Robert Ivy, CEO of the American Institute of Architects, architects now and in the future will work with the medical community to change how people interact with their environment in a much more healthier way. Consider the following facts. Greater than 35 percent of Americans are obese. No less than 34 percent of the nation’s population is overweight. Seventeen percent, or more, of the nation’s youth are obese. At least 10 percent of the population has diabetes, and another eight million are not even aware they are diabetic.

While these are all medical conditions, Robert Ivy thinks that architectural design can provide an answer to help combat chronic disease. “Design thinking” could be the answer. For example, architects can design health care facilities that inspire physical exercise. According to archdaily.com, architects can design structures so that they let in natural light. This can help increase productivity and attention. These changes reflect a new era of how architects and health care providers are beginning to work together.

MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio is another example of architectural/health care collaboration. The center will incorporate a number of social activities, buy food from local urban farms, revamp parks and bike paths, and add fitness centers throughout the system.

The High Line of Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood is also working with architects to make the best use of space and land. This area is a vibrant public place that shares an elevated rail line. Consider the fact too that medical schools are beginning to push for training in undergraduate courses that teach architectural design. Architects can work with industry professionals to help design a better future for all of us. Tomorrow’s architect will work with policymakers who commit to building a better environment.

Climate change is likely to have a major influence on critical infrastructure as well. Robert Ivy and the American Institute of Architects feel that it is time to put policies in place that work that speak to human health and the changing environment. The American Institute of Architect’s mission is to help advance the qualify of life for Americans, and to protect the safety, health, and welfare of its citizens. The AIA formed in 1857.
